When a clog is really a main line problem

One slow drain is a local clog. Several drains acting up at once usually point to the main line that carries everything out of the house.

The signs of a main line blockage

  • More than one fixture draining slowly at the same time
  • Water coming up in the tub or shower when the toilet is flushed
  • Gurgling from drains when the washing machine empties
  • Water or sewage at a floor drain or the lowest fixture in the house
  • A sewer smell inside the home

Why it matters

A branch line serves one fixture or one room. The main line serves all of them. When it is blocked, water from anywhere in the house has nowhere to go and finds the lowest opening — often a shower or a ground-floor toilet.

If several drains back up together, stop running water in the house until the line is cleared.

How we handle it

Our trucks carry drain machines and camera inspection gear. We clear the line through a cleanout, then use the camera to see what caused the blockage — grease, roots, a sag in the line, or a break. That tells us whether the job is done or whether the line needs repair.

A main line backup is a job for a professional. Call or send the form, and for sewage coming into the house, call — emergency support is available 24/7.
