A seasonal plumbing checklist for Inland Empire homes
A few minutes each season catches most plumbing problems while they are still small. Here is the checklist we would use in our own homes.

Every season
- Look under sinks for drips, stains or soft cabinet floors
- Check around the base of toilets for moisture
- Listen for toilets that run after flushing
- Glance at the water heater for leaks or corrosion on the fittings
Summer
Irrigation runs hardest in the heat. Walk the yard while each zone runs and look for broken heads, geysers, or soggy patches that suggest a leaking line.
Fall and winter
Before the holidays, when kitchens work hardest, keep grease out of the sink. Inland Empire winters are mild, but exposed pipes and hose bibs on colder foothill nights are worth checking.
Once a year
- Flush the water heater and have the sacrificial rod checked
- Test the main shutoff valve so you know it works
- Clean faucet aerators and showerheads of mineral scale
The best time to find your main shutoff is before you need it.
