Garbage disposal do’s and don’ts
A disposal handles small food scraps well. Most jams and clogs come from asking it to do more than that.

Do
- Run cold water before, during and after using it
- Feed scraps in gradually instead of all at once
- Keep the disposal running until the grinding sound stops
Don’t
- Pour grease or oil into it
- Grind fibrous peels, bones or fruit pits
- Put coffee grounds or eggshells down it
- Reach into it with your hand
Never put a hand inside a disposal. Switch off the power first, and use the hex key socket on the bottom to free a jam.
Humming but not turning
A disposal that hums but will not spin is usually jammed. With the power off, many units can be freed with the hex key socket on the underside, then reset with the red button. If it jams again, leaks from the bottom, or will not turn on at all, it may need repair or replacement.
We repair and replace all types of garbage disposals. Request service if yours has stopped working.
