How to find a hidden water leak before it spreads

A hidden leak can run for weeks before it shows. The water meter is the simplest way to find out whether you have one.

The meter test

Turn off every tap, appliance and irrigation zone in the house. Then look at the water meter and note the reading, or watch the small leak indicator on the dial. If it moves while nothing in the house is using water, water is going somewhere it should not.

Other signs to look for

  • A water bill that is higher than usual with no change in use
  • The sound of running water when everything is off
  • Damp spots, stains or bubbling paint on walls or ceilings
  • Warm spots on the floor
  • Soggy patches in the yard between the meter and the house

If the meter moves with every fixture off, you have a leak. Where it is comes next.

Narrowing it down

Toilets are a common silent culprit — a worn flapper can run water into the bowl all day. Irrigation lines are another. Leaks inside walls, under slabs, or on the line between the meter and the house need proper leak detection, and that is where we come in.

We handle leak detection and repair, from a dripping fixture to a slab or wall leak. Request a visit and tell us what you have noticed.
