Sewer backup: what to do before the plumber arrives
A sewer backup is unpleasant and unsanitary. A few steps keep it from getting worse while help is on the way.

Stop adding water
Every flush, shower and load of laundry sends more water into a line that cannot take it. Stop using all water in the house until the line is cleared, and let everyone at home know.
Keep people and pets away
Sewage carries bacteria. Keep children and pets out of the affected area, and wear gloves and waterproof boots if you have to go near it.
- Stop running water anywhere in the house
- Keep kids and pets clear of the area
- Open windows for ventilation if it is safe to do so
- Do not use chemical drain cleaners on a backed-up main line
Stop using water in the house. The line needs to be cleared before anything drains.
Know where your cleanout is
Many homes have a sewer cleanout outside, often a capped pipe near the foundation. It is how we access and clear the main line, so clear a path to it if you can.
Sewer backups are one of our emergency calls, day or night. After the line is cleared, a camera inspection shows why it backed up. Call, or see our sewer line services.
