What a backflow prevention device does

A backflow device keeps water from flowing backward into the clean supply. Here is what it protects against and why it needs attention.

What backflow is

Water is supposed to flow one way: from the supply into your property. If pressure drops on the supply side — during a main break, for example — water can be pulled backward. Anything connected to the system, like an irrigation line or a commercial process, could then flow back toward the drinking water.

Where you find them

  • Irrigation systems
  • Commercial buildings and restaurants
  • Fire sprinkler connections
  • Properties with boilers or other equipment tied to the water supply

A backflow device is a set of valves that only lets water move one direction.

Keeping one working

Backflow assemblies have internal checks and seals that wear over time. A leaking or failed device may need repair or replacement. We install and repair backflow prevention devices for both residential and commercial properties.
