Smell gas near a water heater or appliance? Here is what to do

A gas smell is a safety issue first and a plumbing issue second. Get everyone out, then call from outside.

If the smell is strong

  • Get everyone out of the house right away
  • Do not switch lights, appliances or anything electrical on or off
  • Do not use a lighter, match or anything that could spark
  • Once you are safely outside, call 911 or your gas utility

Leave first, call second. Do not look for the leak yourself.

If it is faint

A faint smell near a water heater, stove or dryer can come from a loose fitting or a pilot that has gone out. It still needs to be checked. If you are not sure, treat it as serious and follow the steps above.

Getting the gas line repaired

Once the area has been made safe, a leak on a gas line or appliance connection needs a licensed repair. American Made Plumbing has certified gas fitters who install, repair and replace gas pipe.
